PRE_FALL 2011 READY-TO- WEAR

Coming the collection in cool shades of chalk, charcoal, and black, Tomas Maier's pre-fall outing for Bottega Veneta positively popped with color. There were bold, color-blocked coats and solid silk shifts in vivid primary hues. Even the more fitted sleeveless sheaths in Prince of Wales check were handpainted with subtle washes of color. Cut and construction remain the designer's obsessions. A simple coat, for example, was patchworked together from at least three different fabrics; it almost looked like it had been turned inside out, as if Maier wanted the world to see its meticulous inner workings. If that sounds like a tough sell with some Bottega customers, the latest innovations to the intrecciato bags won't be: Now they're woven with extra fringes of leather. The patent d'Orsay ballet flats Maier showed with everything—short and long, but they're worth a mention, as they make a pretty persuasive argument to ditch heels for good.

The increasingly in-demand Emma Roberts got a little dotty on The Tonight Show yesterday while promoting her latest project, Scream 4. Donning a Dolce & Gabbana spaghetti strap spotted sheath dress and freshly-coiffed blonde locks, the rising star looked as wholesome as American pie, but kept it edgy with marigold sky-high heels by Brian Atwood. Armed with a mega-watt smile, the new horror thespian let her golden girl personality shine through. Clearly talent runs in the family.

Swedish-Canadian stunner Malin Akerman stood out last night at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her newest dramatic venture, The Bang Bang Club. All her fashion risks paid off in a daring-yet-darling peach leather dress with draped skirt and sandy platform peep-toe sandals.  Akerman might have stuck to desert color tones, but with an eye-catching Cartier bracelet and slicked-back red ponytail in lieu of her trademark blond locks, her look was anything but neutral.
